Amidst tense situation and angry demand from local meira paibis to punish the murderer, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal today remanded Haorungbam Mema Devi, the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of one Mayengbam Sumatibala Devi of Tera Tongbram Leikai on December 15 to police custody till December 23.The victim, Sumatibala Devi (37), daughter of one late Mani Singh was found dead with multiple stabbing wounds inside her house which was locked from the outside.
Mema Devi (60), wife of N Sanatombi of Uripok Khumanthem Leikai was arrested by the Lamphel Police from her residence, yesterday.
The Lamphel Police had already arrested three other suspects in connection with the case and remanded them to police custody till tomorrow.
The police had registered an FIR on the matter under Section 302 IPC.
The Investigation Officer of the case had also stated in his report submitted to the Court that the bloodstained knife with which the spine chilling crime was allegedly committed and the hair strands of the victim have been recovered from the spot of the crime.
The report further said that the accused Mema along with her son identified as Kiran, who bad borrowed around Rs 70,000 from the deceased used to visit her house quite often.
On the fateful day the two were also reportedly seen calling on the house of the deceased.
It is suspected that Mema in connivance with her son Kiran committed the crime as they could not repay the debt they owed.
Kiran is said to be currently running a martial art school in Nepal.
As the accused Mema was produced before the Court today, angry local meira Paibis stormed the Court complex demanding punishment of the accused.
Police had a hard time controlling the angry crowd.
