Imphal, March 01:
Minister of Revenue Th Debendra has assured to provide substitute plot beyond MU compound in place of the plot reserved for Manipur University within its boundary fencing.
Responding to a call attention motion raised by MLA I Hemochandra, Debendra disclosed that 1.9 acre of land reserved for MU to meet its requirement following the upgradation of MU to a central university now lies within its compound wall according to which the State Government has cancelled an order concerning dereservation of the plot.
However Hemochandra observed that against this reservation, one land owner Salam Nimai has been undertaking a fast unto death stir at Sajiwa jail and asked the Revenue Minister as to why the dereservation order was cancelled.
Hemochandra mentioned that so far Manipur University has acquired 286.67 acres according to its requirements out of which 1.9 acres were dereserved.
But when the compound fencing commenced, the State Government conspired to hand over the dereserved land to MU, against which Salam Nimai undertook fast unto death stir.
In addition to Nimai, one Nongthombam Amu (71) has also joined the fast unto death stir, Hemochandra added.
Concerning the controversial land on the western side of MU near Langthabal Mantrikhong, the State Government has talked with Young Learners' Library Association, informed Devendra while disclosing that the State is working on alternative land at the periphery of the university to exchange with the controversial plot which is now being used as grazing ground by the locality.
