Imphal, September 20: In an apparent bid to keep things under wraps as much as possible, the post mortem of the 11 slain 5/8 Gorkha Regiment jawans who were killed in the ambush by KYKL at Ngariyan in Bishnupur district yesterday was conducted at the site of the incident.

There are two posts of the 5/8 GR located at Upper Ngariyan and Lower Ngariyan.

The GR personnel first drove from the Upper post to the Lower post on three vehicles and the troops conducted an ROP on foot.

Thereafter they boarded the vehicles and were returning to the Upper post when they were waylaid by the KYKL men.

The first bullet fired was from a sniper rifle which hit the driver of the first vehicle on the head.

As the first vehicle careened off the road and came tumbling down the road, the militants who were well positioned opened a fusillade of gun fire including lethod bombs.

Two of the three vehicles were damaged beyond repair.

Nine GR jawans died at the spot while another succumbed to his injuries at Bishnupur hospital while the other passed away at RIMS hospital.

Post mortem was conducted at the site of the incident and Medico-Legal Expert of Churachandpur Dr Ibomcha was pressed into service for the operations.

The deceased include a Subedar, three Havildars, on Lance Havildar, two Naiks, one Lance Naik and three Riflemen.

After post mortem the bodies of the slain jawans were taken to the Lower post of Ngariyan where they are presently kept.

The deceased have been identified as Subedar Om Prasad Gurung, Havildar Dhal Bahadur Thapa, Havildar Prasad Gurung, Havildar Som Bahadur Shresta, Lance Subedar Lekh Bahadur, Naik Khaji Prasad, Naik Dhan Bahadur Rana, Lance Naik Jip Bahadur Bahakari, Rifleman Dhan Bahadur, Rifleman Raju Mayar and Riflemen Binodkumar.

Suspected UNLF man killed: A suspected cadre of the proscribed UNLF and a minor girl were killed in a shoot out with personnel of Raj Rifles on September 18 at about 4.30 pm at Paojal village under Thanlon police station in Churachandpur district.

The deceased minor girl has been identified as Kimjahaibual Hauzel (9) daughter of Ginjahao of Paojal village.

The suspected UNLF cadre is yet to be identified.

Both the bodies have been deposited at the Churachandpur district hospital morgue.

In another incident, ZRA cadres gunned down five cadres of the rival ZRF yesterday at about 3 am at Loibul village in Churachandpur district.

One girl caught in the firing also died, said sources.

The six killed ZRF cadres are identified as Langchinlian of Imphal, Thankhanmang of Lungkhun village, Singhat, Hangalian of New Lamka (G), Kaponsong of Bukpi village, Paokhalmuan of Bukpoi village and Hanglunthang of Jelhang Bazar.

The girl who was caught in the firing and died i identified as Aithen Kim (16) of Laibul village.

The ZRF cadres were holed up at the residence of the girl when the attack occurred, said sources.
