Imphal, June 29: Announcing the change of nomenclature of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur and restructuring its, its Secretary Saratkumar today said that new policy will cover students within the elementary stage with insurance schemes.

Speaking to news persons today, the Board Secretary referred to the fifth Amendment 2004 of Manipur Secondary Education Act 1972 and subsequent approval of the Government through a gazette notification published on March 31, 2004 to rename BSEM as �Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Manipur�.

In compliance with the amendment, the previous formality of Directorate of Education (Schools) concerning academic activities, registration of students and school recognition would be handled by the Board.

Moreover, the Board will be responsible for printing prescribing the syllabi from class I to VIII which was previously looked after by the SCERT, the Secretary said and added the Board will formally implement the task with effect from the next academic session (2006).In connection with the insurance cover he said Rs 10 would be levied from every registered students in the elementary stage (Cl I-VIII) studying at Government, Govt aided or private institutions.

Elaborating on the matter, the Board official stated that out of the levied sum as registration fee Rs 8.90 would be in the Board account and the remaining sum (Re 1.10) will be in the account of Oriental Insurance Company as insurance cover of the students.

In case of death of the registered student/s the Company will pay Rs 25,000 with similar amount if the student/s is physically impaired due to accident whereas financial assistance of Rs 1000 would be extended for those requiring medical treatment with a maximum amount of Rs 250 for purchase of new text books if the study material is lost in some incidents, detailed Saratchandra.

Regarding his personal accomplishment since taking the top charge of the Board over a month back, he cited distribution of books worth Rs 150 to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Tribes and female students belonging to the general category under the Sarva Siksa Abhiyan programme.

As per State Cabinet decision to introduce Meetei mayek and Roman script text books from the next academic session in class I-II, Saratchandra claimed of completing preparatory works with the only remaining task on the matter being printing.

To print the required number of these text books which tallies to 12 for every students in the said classes 7 metric tonne of paper would be have to be utilised, the Secretary informed.

For preparation of text books concerning classes I-VIII for the next academic session total requirement of paper will be 27 metric tonne and to be procured from Guwahati, said Saratchandra and conveyed for the print material stranded on the way due to economic blockade in the Manipur stretch of the National Highway No 39.
