Imphal, January 14:
Reacting to the decision of the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee to impose a 48 hour bandh from January 15 in hill districts of the Manipur to demand the extension of the 6th Schedule provisions to the hill districts, the apex body of the Naga, the United Naga Council (UNC) has asked all Naga tribal councils, frontal organizations and individuals to refrain from associating with any movement including the Sixth Schedule as it is not consistent with the aspirations of the Naga people.
In a statement, UNC vice president P Modoli stated that any movement that does not strengthen and contribute to the Naga People's Convention resolution will not have the support of the UNC and its constituents.
Citing the reason for its decision to stay away from the demand raised by the Committee, the UNC leader said that the Council is guided by the declaration of the Naga Peoples Convention (NPC) in its special session held on August 8 and 9, 2001 which clearly states "that our identity and history have to be defended and preserved at all cost, and the firm political stand of the Nagas of Manipur is to uphold the resolution of the Naga people for integration of all Naga areas under one administration".
