The final census report of the State conducted during February 2001 has been unveiled today.
Accordingly, the total population of Manipur is 22,93,895.This include 11,61,952 male and 11,31,988 female.
The census report was unveiled by Commissioner of Science and Technology P Sharatchandra during the Census Data Dissemination cum workshop held at State Guest House, Sanjenthong here today.
The workshop was organized by Directorate of Census Operations, Manipur at the conference hall of the Guest House.
As many as 708 supervisors and 4084 enumerators conducted the head count spending over Rs 81,58,000.However, the controversial census figure of Mao Maram, Paomata and Purul sub-divisions in Senapati district which stands at 1,27,108 has been kept aside as 'estimated census figure' in the final report.
Without the inclusion of this controversial census figure of the three sub-divisions, the total population of Manipur is 21,66,788 only.
It may be noted here that the final population results for Mao Maram, Paomata and Purul sub-divisions have been cancelled due to administrative and technical reasons although the population census was carried out in these sub- divisions as per schedule.
According to the final census report, the overall sex-ratio in the State is 1000 male against 978 female.
But there is slight variation in the Urban and Rural area.
In Urban area, it is 1000 male against 1009 female whereas in the Rural area, the sex-ratio is pegged at 1000 male against 967 female.
The population of children below 6 year of age in the State is 3,08,585.Out of these, 1,57,682 are boys and 1,50,903 are girls.
The total population of schedule caste in the State is 60,037 comprising of 29,934 male and 30,103 female.
Whereas that of schedule tribe is 7,41,141, thereby constituting 34.2 percent of the total State�s population.
This include 3,78,319 male and 3,66,822 female.
According to the latest census report of the State, 70.5 percent of its people are literate.
Male literacy rate is 80.3 percent as against female literacy rate of 60.5 percent.
