Imphal, March 26:
Conveying deep concern over the alleged ill-treatment meted out to Kuki students by personnel of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force on March 23 in Delhi where a mass rally was taken out under the aegis of Kuki Students' Organisation, Lok Sabha MP Mani Charenamei has appealed to the Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to address the alleged grievances of the Kuki students.
A representation submitted to the NHRC asserted that more than 30 Kuki villagers have been killed by landmine explosions in Chandel and Churachandpur districts allegedly planted by a UG outfit.
More recently, the same UG group, with the help of Myanmar military junta, abducted about 500 Kuki villagers and took them to Myanmar, the MP alleged.
He maintained that the State Government has failed to act in all these cases of gross violation of human rights perpetrated by the UG group.
Following the refusal of the State Government to address the issue despite repeated appeals and reminders, the Kuki students decided to take up the issue in the National capital.
However, the Union Government instead of paying attention to the grievances and injustices being meted out to the Kuki community, the Delhi police and Rapid Action Force assaulted the students with batons resulting in hospitalisation of 18 students with severe injuries.
Quoting the two women who were also injured in the police action, the MP claimed that the women were sexually molested by personnel of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force.
Moreover 120 Kuki students who were arrested and detained in the Parliament Street Police Station have been sent to Tihar Jail except for the one who was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
Conveying deep concern and shock at the alleged brutality of Delhi Police against the students who were demanding protection of their rights, MP Charenamei remarked that such bitter experience would only alienate the students and their entire community from the mainstream.
The MP also sought a letter of apology from the police office in charge of the Parliament Street Police Station, befitting punishment to the personnel of Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force for their alleged assault on the students and compensation to the Kuki students who were arrested.
He also asked for immediate landmine sanitization in Churachandpur and Chandel districts.
The MP further sought intervention of the Union Government to ensure safe release of the Kuki villagers allegedly abducted by the Myanmar Military junta and a high level enquiry into the activities of the concerned UG group.
