The 59th Manipur Kanba Numit organised by Irabot Celebration Committee was observed today at Irabot Park in Lamlai AC's Challou with Chairman of CPI Control Commission M Ibohal and Secretary of the political party's State unit B Sharma as the chief guest and president respectively.
Among other highlights of the observation, a public march was taken out from Yourabung Primary School ground till irabot Park in addition to paying floral tribute at the Pundongbam incident site wherein security forces opened fired at demonstrators decades back.
Health and Family Welfare Minister P Parijat and MLA U Deven were the guests of honour on the occasion in which several leaders of the Leftist political party were also present.
The day is being observed in memory of Jana Neta Hijam Irabot's defiance to a specific policy of the erstwhile Govt of India regarding formation of Purbanchal State comprising of Manipur, Tripura, Lushai Hills, and Karbi Anglong and Cachar of Assam on this day in 1948.In his address, Minister Parijat noting concerted effort of Jana Neta Irabot in unifying the people for a joint movement against the unpopular policy of the Indian Govt called upon the present and upcoming generation to strive for unity and development.
Cautioning that manipur is yet to breadth freely from the choking grip of certain vested elements campaigning to divide the people on communal ground and ethnicity, Parijat reminded that observation of Manipur Kanba Numit (protection day) is the most auspicious occasion to renew pledge for peaceful co-existence.
Speaking on the occasion, former Minister Dr M Nara conveyed to the gathering that CPI's Central leader AB Bardhan had intimated State functionaries to prepare for movement against the any Government that fail to control price rise despite the fact that CPI is a coalition partner of the Congress-led SPF Government in the State.
