Gaikhangam formally takes charge

Imphal, September 14, 2010: Re-election of Gaikhangam as Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has been officially confirmed with the handing over of relevant certificates by Sanjay Dadlika, who has been deputed by the AICC Central Election Authority as Manipur in-charge to over-see the Congress organisational election here.

Inspite of being shadowed by claims and counter-claims of an imminent contest for the top post of the MPCC, Gaikhangam was the only candidate to file nomination papers.

MLA E Dwijamani, is likely to be appointed as MPCC's working president.

In sync with the decision adopted at a meeting held yesterday at Congress Bhavan which was attended by Chief Minister O ibobi Singh, MPCC president Gaikhangam and other senior party leaders, Gaikhangam filed nomination to the said posts.

While certificates confirming their respective posts were also handed over at the occasion, it has also been announced that MPCC has apprised AICC leaders with regard to recommending Dwijamani as the Working President.

Speaking after the brief certificate handing over ceremony, the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction that inspite of some differences that preceded the MPCC election all the leaders and members concerned contributed their mite in resolving the issue by according top priority and importance to the Congress principle of discipline and unity.

Conceding that differences of opinion do crops up as the Indian National Congress is not only the largest political organisation but also believes in democracy, Ibobi exuded confidence that through strict adherence to policy of transparency any problem that arises within the Congress-led SPF Government or the Congress party would be solved amicably.

He also called upon the party leaders and members to work for sustaining development of the State and affirmed that after consulting Central leaders expansion of the MPCC would be processed in due course of time.

Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing, in his address, stressed on the need for sorting out differences, if any, within the party and strongly suggested that no activities or gesture of the Congress should amount to disturbing cordially between the hill and valley people.

The former Chief Minister also congratulated Gaikhangam on his re-election as the MPCC chief as well as the Nungba AC MLA's initiative and effort in the successful conduct and completing Congress party's organisational elections from the grass-roots to the Pradesh Congress Committee level.

Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya and vice president-elect E Dwijamani were also present at the occasion.

Meanwhile, a Congress Bhavan source has informed that including E Dwijamani names of eight vice presidents have been declared apart from appointment of 11 general secretaries and eight secretaries.

The new MPCC tenure also has 21 executive members and 19 MPCC election committee members.

Relevant processes for nomination of 10 AICC members, nine AICC co-opted members and five ex-officio AICC members have also been completed this evening, the source confided.
