Imphal, December 13: One UG cadre suspected to be the Finance Secretary of the United Socialist Revolutionary Army (USRA) was shot dead by a combined team of Imphal West and Imphal East commandos at Checkon under Porompat Police Station at about 2.10 pm today.

In a statement, Imphal East SP L Kailun said that two members of the United Socialist Revolutionary Army were arrested by a combined team of Imphal East and West police commandos from near the Louch and Bond Oil pump today.

The two have been identified as Wahengbam Lokhon (23) of Chairen Ahallup and Kangjam Nanao Meitei alias Boy (27) of Waikhong police station.

On further interrogation, the two led the police team to a hide out of the outfit at New Checkon area.

During a search operation, the police team saw an individual running away.

The police party gave chase and ordered him to stop, but instead the individual opened fire, said the statement and in the retaliatory firing he was killed at the house of one Thaimei Makukhon Rongmei (72).One 9 mm pistol with two live rounds were recovered from him, said the SP.

The statement further said that a demand letter of Rs 10 lakhs addressed to the Chief Engineer of Minor Irrigation was recovered from Lokhon Meitei.

The demand letter was issued under the name of one James Vaiphei, finance secretary of USRA.

Another demand letter of Rs 20 lakhs addressed to Director of RIMS was also recovered from Nanao Meitei alias Boy.

One motor cycle (RX Yamaha) was also recovered, added the SP.

It is reported that the commandos gave a hot chase as the individual fled into a house of Checkon before he was shot down.

One 9 mm pistol and five live rounds were recovered from the deceased.

He might be one James Kuki, Finance Secretary of USRA, says a report.

Even as the house where he was staying belong to a noted personality, police refused to divulge the identity of the house owner.

The corpse has been deposited at RIMS mortuary by Porompat police.

According to information received by press, the suspected Kuki UG cadre was talking over phone in a PCO located at Chassad Avenue from where the commandos chased him firing all along till the house of Makukhon Kabui (70) at Namthanpung near Sanjenthong where he ran in.

In the pursuit, the cadre was hit by a bullet.

After calling out all the inmates of the house, the commandos went inside in search of the UG cadre.

The cadre was found hiding under a bed and the commandos shot him then and there.
