Imphal, June 11: A 24 hour general strike called by the JAC against the spate of violence that broke out in Moreh on June 9 which left 11 persons dead and one injured has come into force with effect from 6 pm today.

The JAC Against The Brutal Killing of Innocent Peoples At Moreh was constituted in the aftermath of the Moreh incidents.

On the other hand, even as post mortem have been conducted on the corpses of five persons belonging to Khurai area today, the JAC has refused to claim the bodies.

The JAC maintained that they would take the corpses only when Arambam Tomba of Khurai Chaithabi Leirak who was earlier reported killed is handed over to them.

The protest agitation of blocking roads in Khurai area launched yesterday by the JAC continued today too.

Due to the road blockade imposed by the JAC, vehicles stayed off the roads leading to Pangei and Ukhrul.

Moreover, shops at Lamlai and Pureiromba bazars remained closed today.

In a public meeting held today at Popular High School ground Khurai Konsam Leikai under the aegis of the JAC, representatives of AMUCO, UCM, AMKIL, UPF and other social organisations unanimously condemned the alleged unwarranted inaction of 24 AR posted at Moreh.

They also appealed to the people to keep their emotions and anguish under control in order to avoid any unwanted communal conflict among the indigenous people of the State who have been living together in harmony since ages.

In connection with the violent incidents, a team of the JAC talked with the Chief Minister at his official residence for the second day today during which a memorandum containing seven points was also submitted to him for necessary action.

In response to the various demands of the JAC, the Chief Minister assured all possible help including ex-gratia to the bereaved families before the Mangani Leihun rites of the deceased persons.

He had also pledged Rs 20,000 each to the bereaved families from his discretionary fund earlier.

Other assurances made by Ibobi included institution of a judicial enquiry into the Moreh killings and to punish the culprits according to the law of the land and erection of a memorial tomb in honour of the deceased victims at Moreh for which the State Government would bear all expenditure so as to avoid such ugly incidents in future etc, conveyed the JAC.

Earlier in the day FCS Minister Th debendra handed over Rs 20,000 each to the bereaved families of Khurai from the Chief Minister's discretionary fund.
