Imphal, May 07:
With huge piles of garbage and waste materials accumulated at regular and short intervals of every street in Imphal town, the capital town of the State is stinking, literally.
Even though one could not claim that the situation is a new one in Imphal town, the situation has aggravated from bad to worst in the last few days following alleged intimidations issued by some unidentified persons against the Imphal Municipal Council.
All the commuters have been forced to muffle their noses while passing these highly polluted streets.
The smell is rotten and unbearable.
Consequent upon huge piles of garbage accumulated at road sides, the nearby drains have been choked and everywhere there is water logging which provides a fertile breeding ground for many germs.
Under such a situation, one cannot help but ask the health and hygiene consciousness level of the town folk.
As in other issues, it was the women folk who protested first by piling up the wastage in the middle of the busy Nagamapal road.
On the other hand, IMC Chairperson A Jiwanlata and Executive Officer S Noren have been staying away from their offices after their offices were sealed on April 28 by some unidentified persons.
According to official sources, the IMC office was sealed as a result of IMC refusing to sanction a contract work in favour of the particular individuals/group.
Since then armed police are being deployed in and around IMC office to thwart any disruptive activity.
Yet, the Chairperson and EO have not come back to their office fearing for the worst.
It is also reported that unidentified persons also threatened drivers of garbage pick-up trucks against discharging their duties resulting in total paralysis of the IMC.
In this regard the IMC has written to the State Government for security cover while on duty.
Though the reasons and circumstances may be different, the IMC has never been able to function and discharge its duties properly and regularly.
It has been intermittently plagued by repeated cease work stirs by its own employees against non-payment of salaries for a prolonged period.
