Remand for accused in '05 arrear scam

Impal, Aug 02: The Internal Audit Officer of the Education (S) Department, who was named as an accused in the Rs 12 crore arrear scam of retired Head Pandits/Head Master in 2005, Khuraijam Labango surrendered before the Court of the Special Judge I, Manipur East today and has subsequently been remanded to four days police custody, following a prayer moved by the Additional SP (P) who is the IO of the case.

Labango had earlier sought pre-arrest warrant but it was turned down by the Additional Sessions Judge on June 10, 2005 and thereafter he absconded to evade arrest.

Following this the Special Judge I, Manipur East Max Phazang issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against the absconding official on June 14 last year, said a well placed source while talking to The Sangai Express.

The story of the scam was broken by The Sangai Express and it had rocked the State Assembly.

Thereafter a House Committee was constituted to probe the matter and the dimension of the fraudulent withdrawal of such a large amount of money came to light.

A number of high ranking officials have been nailed and arrested in the case.
