The SP of Imphal West police, Clay Khongsai has been entrusted with the task of probing the killing of two persons by troops of 22 Maratha Light Infantry at Sagaisabi under Mayang Imphal police on September 4 night.
The decision to direct the SP to conduct the inquiry was taken during a meeting between family members of the two deceased persons, meira paibis, social workers and MLA of Thanga, Salam Ibohal and the Chief Minister-in-charge Th Debendra today.
The meeting was held from 7 pm till 8.30 pm.
Speaking to The Sangai Express the MLA said that he made it very clear to the CM-in-charge that the two persons were civilians.
During the meeting the SP also opined that the antecedents of the two were clean.
However since they were found with arms, the SP has been asked to conduct a thorough probe.
Talking to the JAC members, formed in connection with the death of the two persons, Th Debendra appealed to them to take back the bodies.
When MLA S Ibohal demanded an assurance from the side of the Government, the CM-in-charge asked him to wait till tomorrow as the matter has to be consulted with the CM who is currently in New Delhi.
Earlier before the meeting, a large number of JAC members came in a bus to seek an audience with the CM-in-charge.
They were however stopped at Kwakeithel and later a group of representatives was allowed to meet Debendra.
The JAC also submitted a memorandum to the CM-in-charge maintaining that the two deceased persons were fishermen and the sole bread earners for their families.
The memorandum added that the killing of the two persons is another manifestation of the immunity granted to the security personnel by AFSPA.
The memorandum outlined a two point charter of demand.
The demands include, repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and to prosecute the personnel of 22 Maratha Light Infantry responsible for the killing of the two persons.
The JAC added that they will not take back the bodies till their demands are met.
