National workshop on ATLAS.ti begins

Imphal, January 17 2025: A five-day national workshop on 'Qualitative Data Analysis Using ATLAS.ti' organised jointly by Department of Mass Communication anti Centre for the Study of Sbcial Inclusion, Manipur University commenced from Friday at the Court Hall of the University.

ATLAS.ti is a tool that supports locating, coding/tagging, and annotating features within bodies of unstructured data, it also offers visualization functions.

The software is used by researchers in a wide variety of fields, and it supports data in text, graphical, audio, video, and geospatial format.

The inaugural function was attended by MU VC Prof N Lokendra Singh as chief guest, Department of Mass Communication head in-charge Dr Rk Lilapati Devi as president while School of Social Sciences dean Prof L Memcha Devi, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Surendranath College for Women, Kolkata head Prof Uma Shankar Panday were the guests of honour.

In his address, Prof N Lokendra stressed the need for changes in the guidelines of research technology of hu-manify and social sciences.

He also reflected on challenges faced in providing information ideologically or accessing data Under a comprehensive and usable framework on society, economy, cultural practices and identity.

"As such, there is need to compile, store and use data under a specific frame.

Additionally, there is a need to gather personal narratives, personal interaction, photographic evidence, newspaper reports and others for providing an authentic interpretation," he said.

Centre for the Study of Social Inclusion, associate Prof Thiyam Bharat Singh, said that the workshop would provide knowledge of qualitative data analysis to the young scholars, and faculty members of the university.

He opined that social science research entails a lot of data, which requires knowledge of analysis, narrative data, interview and group discussion to ascertain pattern and relations.

"Thus, the workshop will be teaching the software that can be used for analysis," he stated, while expressing that it would be of great help in inter-disciplinary researches.
