Sangai Fest brings back smile on widows

Imphal, November 26 2013: For a group of women who had endured difficult times or are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and victims of ongoing armed conflict, Manipur Sangai festival is surprisingly proving to be an exhilarating experience, both financially and mentally.

An organisation of widows from different corners of the State, Helping Hand Centre (HHC) was reportedly formed in 2009 under the patronage of Women's Action for Development, itself an NGO for womenfolk in distress, with some of the Centre's members taking part at the Festival able to relax and forget their traumatic past, albeit temporarily.

Speaking to The Sangai Express at the Palace Compound main venue of the ongoing Manipur Sangai Festival on behalf of the HHC members, Wonchung Jajo (36) of Wino Bazar, Ukhrul district said Stall No.82 run by HHC members has been able to draw visitors in large number consequently earning the group about Rs 40,000 from sale of various handloom and handicraft as well as food products made/prepared by HHC members.

Confiding that HHC aims to sell about Rs 1 lakh during the 10-day event, which is into its sixth day today, Wonchung said the Centre has about 200 widows practising various trades at HHC units opened in all the nine districts of Manipur.

Expressing elation that the Commerce and Industries Department organised festival has been a pleasant surprise till date, she suggested that HHC be invited at future events organised by the Department to enable the women in distress live a respectable life.

wonchung further stated that not only locals but foreign tourists too are drawn to the HHC stall where sale of various products with traditional taste and flavour has been brisk.

Apart from selling the goods the enquiries about the group and further positive tips by the visitors will be huge morale boost for the members, she said adding that the ongoing Festival is like a boon for the widows whose products lack proper marketing avenues.

The HHC stall mainly comprises of eatables, toiletries & agarbati products, contemporary handloom and handicraft items and agro-horticulture products.
