Lamka, May 26:
The 48 hour general strike called by Churachandpur District Students' Union that began last night completely cripples normal life here.
Even emergency services such as medical, electricity and power were also affected as it was only the media left out from the purview of the bandh.
All activities within the district, except some condolence services came to a standstill and even those services were affected as all means of communication were snapped.
Though there was no report of any untoward incident, security personnel were in full alert patrolling the streets of the town besides fortifying significant Government establishments.
Vital documents of Electricity Department as well as Education Dept were reportedly kept in security custody to avoid recurrence of yesterday's late afternoon incident where students set ablaze crucial documents after raiding the district Electricity Department.
Police and paramilitary personnel equipped with tear gas stood guard along the township stretch even as vehicles including cycles and rickshaws kept off the road.
The union leaders headed by its president K Doukhum met the district authorities at around 2 in the evening today.
Details of the talks however were not disclosed even as the student leaders claimed that the meeting was an informal one meant only to convey their grievances.
Later in the day CDSU announced the relaxation of the bandh for the District Hospital and Sielmat Hospital and their duty staff for tomorrow on humanitarian grounds but maintained the closure of medical establishments other than the two mentioned hospitals.
CDSU has also ruled out any talks unless implementation of their ten point demands were initiated and intimated its intention of taking up more forceful means of agitation.
The 48 hour general strike still has another 24 hours to go and it is believed to be the most crucial as there were reports about students planning raids on some Governmental establishments.
