Imphal, April 26 2010: The Naga frontal organisations under the banner of the United Naga Council (UNC) have resolved todat at Senapati to deliver a letter to each of the Naga MLAs in Manipur to tender their resignations immediately while the agitating All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has decided to take up more drastic forms of agitation while continuing the ongoing blockade along the two national highways leading to Manipur.

In a late night disclosure to Newmai News Network regarding its April 26 proceedings, the UNC said that the Naga MLAs and ministers have failed miserably to protect and safeguard "our very rights".

The tribal organisations are agitating against the holding of elections to the Autonomous District Councils in Manipur under the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act of 2008 .

"After a thorough deliberation, the meeting resolved that, the advice letter be served to the elected Naga representatives to abdicate from the Manipur Legislative Assembly with immediate affect for their blatant disregard to the interest and welfare of the hill people and the willful refusal to represent the people's voice.

That, their continuation as representatives of the people is no longer tenable in order to safeguard the identity, rights and future of the hill people," the UNC resolution said.

The United Naga Council, Manipur conducted its 'President's Council' meeting at Senapati today attended by the presidents of various tribal hohos, frontal organisations and functionaries of the UNC.

The meeting reviewed on the present situation in matters relating to the imposition of legislations that threatens the rights and interest of the tribal people in Manipur and the strong opposition thereof resorting to various forms of peaceful and democratic demonstrations and agitations.

Meanwhile, the ANSAM said, "While the tribals in Manipur have been democratically displaying their opposition against imposition of the unwanted Act, the indifferent attitude of Government of Manipur through publication of Election Notification of the Autonomous District Councils reveals the chauvinistic attitude of the state government towards the hill people.

We see it as a deliberate attempt to strangulate the tribal peoples of their fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution.

Having failed to understand the sentiments and to uphold the interest and wishes of the people by the government, including the Hill Areas Committee and Council of Cabinet, we find no other option but to continue with our own course of action till the undesirable 3rd Amendment Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act, 2008 is nullified and Election Notification withdrawn.

And while inconveniences and hardships being faced by the public is deeply regret, we appeal all our esteemed well wishers and supporters to continue extending fullest co-operation to save our future" .
