Imphal, April 26: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a youth at Tera Sadokpam Leikai under Lamlai Police Station at around 9 am today.

The slain youth has been identified as Ngangom Sanathoi (24) s/o Ng Bhogen of Napetpalli Mamang Leikai under Lamlai Police Station.

He is said to be a relative of SI Khogen of Imphal West Commandos and staying with Khogen at the Commando complex.

Sanathoi was reportedly picked up by some unidentified persons from DM College campus in the evening yesterday.

Sanathoi was earlier working as a volunteer of AMSU, but later joined the Amway network marketing.

Some four years back, he had also eloped with a girl from Lamshang.

But they were separated.

There were fatal bullet marks on his head, left thigh and below the knee.

Lamphel police have registered a case in connection with the killing.

Meanwhile, UNLF has claimed responsibility for awarding the death penalty on Sanathoi.

Briefing reporters before carrying out the death sentence, a spokesman of the outfit said that Sanathoi was picked up from the DM College campus yesterday at about 5 pm.

Giving details, the spokesman said that Sanathoi was in touch with a police Sub-Inspector of Imphal West police and used to pass on information.

Earlier he was associated with the Lamphel group of the KCP, he added.

Not only is Sanathoi guilty of passing information about cadres of underground organisation to the police, but he was also involved in extorting money from the public in the name of the KCP, said the spokesman.

Elaborating, the spokesman said that in 2003, Sanathoi served a demand notice of Rs 5 lakhs on Zilla Parishad member of Imphal East, Babita.

The money was however not taken.

Sanathoi also extorted Rs 2000 from a pradhan of Heingang Gram Panchayat and served demand letter of Rs 5 lakhs to the Tribal Development Department.

Out of this he took Rs 2 lakhs, added the spokesman.

UNLF cadres picked up Sanathoi from DM College campus yesterday evening after he had extorted a sum of Rs 20,000 from a pharmacy at RIMS road, said the spokesman.

The amount has since been returned to the pharmacy.

For all his crimes the Ghq of UNLF has decided to award him the death penalty, said the spokesman further.
