Meghen throws plebiscite ball/test to CM

Guwahati, March 24 2011: Noting that Okram Ibobi was the first Chief Minister of States under the Government of India to openly talk about plebiscite in the State Assembly, UNLF Chairman RK Meghen has stated that the credibility of the Chief Minister's statement would be decided by subsequent actions.

The rebel leader made this remark while talking to media persons on March 21 when he was produced before the NIA special Court at Guwahati.

However, the Government of India which is directly engaged in the Indo-Manipur conflict has not uttered a single word to the proposal for plebiscite made by UNLF in 2005 .

As removed from the earlier practice of detaining and harassing people who talked about plebiscite, the Chief Minister has openly endorsed the call for plebiscite as a right step.

As such, the Government should give due opportunity to the people to discuss about the issue.

For this, people need not fear anything, the Meghen stated.

The rebel leader derided the Indian system as a total failure.

"The Indian system is a plutocracy abound with scams, scandals and corruption at the highest level.

Even as the impoverished people are punished for the slightest fault, India is a country which takes pride when its elite, wealthy and influential people indulge in bribery and corruption at the highest levels", the UNLF leader further asserted.

"Under such a system, there is no plausible way for small communities to make any tangible progress and and take the road to development.

The refusal of the NIA Court to grant bail to Moirangthem Landhoni after slapping her with several draconian Acts was an racism.

Several draconian Acts have been invoked against Landhoni just like other members of the party but other people not belonging to Meitei community who were arrested together have been granted bail.

Landhoni was not a member of the party.

She was coming only to meet her husband.

The claim that Landhoni was arrested on August 20 last year when she was produced before Court was an act of illegal detention of a person for two days.

Actually, Landhoni was arrested two days earlier on August 18, Meghen disclosed.

He further expressed serious concern over the fate of Landhoni's small kids who have been separated from their mother.

Incidentally, Landhoni's has already completed 23 days of fasting in protest against legal proceedings initiated against her by the NIA.

Landhoni's counsel Ashim Taluqdar said that UNLF Chairman RK Meghen and its leader Ibohal, Rakesh, Maniton and Joy were produced before the Court on March 21. But Landhoni could not appear before the Court as her health condition has deteriorated to a critical level.

She is being detained at Guwahati Medical College.

The NIA Court has fixed the next hearing on April 14 .
