Imphal, September 23:
The Zeliangrong Union, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland (ZU-AMN) has termed "the call for removal" of its president Ningtangpou Kamei as "purely a case of a mob" which is also a "joke".
The September 20 Zeliangrong Union convention held at Tamenglong Hqs has also been strongly condemned by the ZU-AMN.
Terming the convention as an event organised by microscopic minority members who have no respect for the ZU-AMN constitution but took the law into their own hand with criminal intentions, the ZU-AMN in a statement also alleged that the organisers' motive of the September 20 convention was to tarnish the immage of entire Zeliangrong people.
ZU-AMN further alleged that the Tamenglong convention was presided only by Luikang who is a mere zonal chairman of Senapati Zone of the Zeliangrong Union.
In a statement, general secretary of ZU-AMN Kalotdi Kamei said that the ZU(AM&N) as one of the oldest apex bodies of the Naga society functioning with its own time-tested constitution for almost a century, said that the Tamenglong convention of September 20 last was 'unconstitutional' for the Zeliangrong apex body.
Citing part V of Article 25(1) and (2) of the ZU constitution which laid down the procedure for the impeachment of the president, it said the convention of Tamenglong was totally against the said constitution.
It pointed out that under article 17 of the ZU constitution, there is no provision for the removal of its president by a convention and it further added that a convention should be presided by the president of ZU(AM&N) or the vice president, in case of the former's absence.
It also claimed that none of the president or the vice presidents of ZU(AM&N) had attended the convention, and charged that it was done without any recognised authority to conduct the convention while further terming it as an act of mob.
The ZU(AM&N) general secretary also pointed out that, the said convention had representation from only ten villages while there are around 700 Zeliangrong villages.
The statement said that "as warned before, exemplary actions will be initiated against those involved in the so-called convention as per the constitution of the ZU-AMN.
It further appealed to the Zeliangrong people to co-operate in rooting out evil elements from the community.
