Two suspected activists of the Islamic National Front (INF) have been killed in a shoot-out with personnel of 14 Assam Rifles and Imphal West commandos near Kanglatongbi Petrol Pump, 3 kms north of Sekmai police station.
Arms and assorted ammunitions along with incriminating documents have been recovered from the deceased.
According to a PIB (DW) statement, the AR troopers and police commandos gunned down two hard-core cadres suspected to belong to the INF outfit on May 20 night.
The operation was based on specific intelligence about certain UGs involved in extortion in Kanglatongbi area, said the statement and informed that the two approaching the petrol pump were asked to stop by the security team.
Instead of obliging, the two opened indiscriminate firing and attempted to flee towards the field resulting in a hot chase from the security personnel subsequently culminating in a fierce gun-fight, it said.
further searches of the encounter site led to the recovery of two unidentified bodies besides arms and ammos, it maintained and added that the bodies and seized items have been handed to Sekmai police station.
Listed recoveries include one 47 AK rifle, 31 live rounds, one 9 mm pistol, three hand-grenades, one radio set, two pouches and an extortion note bearing insignia of INF.
Identities of the cadres killed in the action is being ascertained, the PIB PRO added.
Meanwhile, Imphal West district police commando and personnel of 22 Maratha Light Infantry arrested one KYKL activist from Kha-Jiri Maning Leikai at around 7.15 am today.
According to statements issued by Imphal West SP and PRO IGAR (S), the arrested activist is identified as Nameirakpam Thoithoi alias Mantri Singh (27) s/o late N Kaoba Singh of Nambol Kha-Jiri Maning Leikai.
The arrested person has been handed over to Nambol police station, added the PRO.
