Troops of 32 Assam Rifles stationed at Keithelmanbi seized 3885 kgs of contraband Ganja worth Rs 2.5 crores in the open market from a Tata truck coming along NC Road yesterday morning.
It is said to be the second largest quantity of Ganja seized in Manipur, the first being seizure of 4260 Kgs of Ganja by NAB in June 2004.According to information received by the press, troops of 32 Assam Rifles detected the contraband Ganja concealed among the metal scraps being transported in the Tata truck (Registration no.WB 41B-2729) driven by one Md Nazir Khan s/o late Md Tomba of Saiton Leitanpokpi during a routine checking at around 10.30 am yesterday.
During the course of the interrogation, Nazir identified the owner of the Tata truck as one Uttam Ghosh of Burdwan, Best Bengal and all the goods had been loaded from a godown located at Kwakeithel and was heading for Silchar.
Two other individuals identified as Sayeed Raju Ali s/o Tayyab Ali of Bihata Sariati, Guwahati and N Kuber Singh s/o N Tumbung of Khadim Awang Leikai, Khumbong, who were also on board the Tata truck have also been arrested by the AR personnel.
Commandant of 9 Sector, AR Brig PK Kayastha, CO of 32 AR and other officials today handed over the seized Ganja along with the arrested person to the officials of Narcotic Control Bureau, Regional Centre, Imphal today.
