Imphal, May 15: A young woman was saved from imminent rape by a surrenderee employed at 7 AR unit of Sendra Tourist Home under Moirang police station by the local villagers.

Victim of the attempted rape Ibemhal (name changed) was in her home at Sendra with her five year old son as her husband was out fishing in a lake at around 7:30 pm yesterday.

A civil dressed man posted in the 7 AR broke open the door of her house and attempted to rape her, she recounted.

PRO (Defence Wing) Lt Col Goswami confirming the incident conveyed of AR authorities' full cooperation in investigating the case.

Mentioning that the accused is a casual labourer employed in the AR camp, the PRO said as the incident occurred beyond the AR campus and has been subsequently handed over to police it is the prerogative of the civil police to do the needful to which AR would extend unflinching cooperation.

Following the incident, womenfolk of the area rose in unison and a complaint was lodged at Moirang PS by Ibemhal herself today.

Speaking to reporters, Ibemhal informed that the accused is one Jiten posted at 7 AR post of Sendra.

Jiten posing himself as a security personnel got hold of her neck and threatened her not to shout and tried to rape her.

However, as her shouts alerted the locals, many rushed to her help and managed to save her from the humiliating crime, said Ibemhal.

After that Jiten was driven away but he was thrashed before he reached the AR gate.

It is reported that Jiten has been seen in the AR camp since it was established in Sendra and most of time clad in civil attires.

Even as the people were demanding handing over Jiten to people since yesterday night, they were told to meet the CO for which no opportunity was provided, informed the villagers.

Jiten is informed to have attempted the criminal act in inebriated condition.

In protest, road blockade was enforced in between Thanga and Moirang from 7 am today that consequently resulted in Jiten, with approval of the CO, apologising to the people at around 4:30 pm.

However, Jiten in the presence of Moirang SDPO and Pradhan of Thanga Part II maintained that "I'm not sure of past incidents but I was not involved in yesterday's incident".

Enraged with the comments, the victim woman unleashed her fury and asked the accused to confess his immoral conduct.

When the AR personnel tried to take back Jiten, Ibemhal blocked their way but Jiten taking advantage of the commotion fled towards the camp.

The women pursued him till the camp who were then prohibited by AR troops during which the women raised slogans against the AR personnel and even threatening to expose male chauvinism.

The womenfolk stayed at the gate of AR unit till late and they also conveyed their wish to take away all security forces from there.

According to witnesses, Jiten was heard threatening Ibemhal in the name of being a security person even when the locals rushed to the house.

Some time back, Jiten was responsible for a melee during a Lai Haraoba ceremony as he threatened people by pretending to possessing arms.

In connection with the incident an FIR has been registered in Moirang PS and the accused taken into custody.

The accused is identified as Keisham Jiten of Keinou Thong Thak.
