Imphal, December 14 2010: A one day awareness cum training programme on bio-medical waste management and handling was held today at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol under the aegis of the Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

The programme was attended by MPCB Chairman MLA E Dwijamani, Forest and Environment Commissioner Dr J Subashbabu, Dr W Dhabali, JNIMS Director Dr Th Biren, Family Welfare Additional Director Dr W Gulapi and Shija Hospitals Managing Director Dr Kh Palin as presidium members.

Speaking at the workshop, MLA Dwijamani no- ted that environmental pro-blems have become a major issue all over the world.

He called upon all to check felling tress and other deforestation activities.

He also highlighted the need to dispose waste materials at proper places in a scientific manner.

While observing the World Environment Day every year, people need to understand about water pollution, its effects as well as control measures.

Exhorting all to keep water bodies clean, the MPCB Chairman said that fitting actions would be taken up against those disposing waste materials at public places.

Hospital authorities,too, should explain to their patients about the proper way and place for disposing waste materials and garbage.

Each and every citizen has a responsibility in controlling pollution, he poin- ted out.

JNIMS Director Dr Th Biren recalled that they used to take bath in the Nambul river during their childhood days.

But today, the pollution has rendered the water unfit for humans.

Shija Hospitals Managing Director Dr Kh Palin said that any one inhaling the smoke exhaust from vehicles on the busy roads of Imphal is similar to smoking two packets of cigarettes even if one is a non-smoker.

This smoke exhaust ejected from vehicles may cause cancer and multiple other diseases.

During the technical session, JNIMS Medical Superintendent Dr L Khomba spoke on the topic 'Improper management of health care waste can result in spreading of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases'.

JN Hospital Microbiologist Dr Y Gopalkrishna spoke on 'Hazards from laboratory/hospital waste, remedy for treatment and disposal option'.

Arju Oinam of Shija Hospitals spoke on 'Regulatory systems of BMW'.

Managing Director of Padma Diagnostic and Research Centre Dr A Vivekananda spoke on 'Understanding the need of bio-medical waste management-Threat to Health Hazard and Environment if not properly handled'.

Dr Kh Palin also spoke on the topic 'urban health' .
