Imphal, July 14 2009:
In protest against the State Cabinet decision to deploy IRB and Police Commandos in the hill districts, a joint emergency meeting of the Naga frontal organisations including United Naga Council (UNC); All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM); Naga Women Union, Manipur (NWUM) and Naga Peoples' Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) have resolved to call a 48-hour total bandh with effect from 5 am of July 20 .
The joint emergency meeting, held on July 12, also strongly denounced the failure of the Government of Manipur to give a positive response to the demand, even after memoranda have been submitted to the Governor and other authorities concerned, for their intervention to advise the State Government to review the State Cabinet decision, a joint statement of the Naga frontal organisations said.
It is condemnable on the part of the State Government to terrorise the peace loving Naga people and hence the Naga people are determined to oppose deployment of additional State and Central armed police or personnel in the hill districts, the joint statement, adding that Media, electricity, water supply, medical, fire services and security forces would be exempted from the purview of the total bandh.
