Call for peace echoes through
Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, June 11: Even as tension continues to grip Moreh following the June 9 killings, a large number of civil society organisations have appealed for good sense to prevail and restore normalcy at the border town.

A joint statement issued by the KSO, Churachandpur, Kuki Inpi, Churachandpur and Meitei Society, Churachandpur today said that a joint meeting of the three bodies was held at the office of the Kuki Inpi, Churachandpur today at 4 pm to discuss the unfortunate incidents at Moreh.

Terming the incidents as unfortunate, the joint statement urged all to ensure that the ugly stand off does not spread to other parts of the State, especially to Churachandpur.

The three bodies have also appealed to all to be wary of unfounded rumours and to stay calm.

Any information should be confirmed from the community leaders, they suggested.

To uphold peace and amicable co-existence, the three organisations pledged to take all possible responsibilities to prevent any unwanted incident and appealed to the public to extend their co-operation.

Another joint statement was also issued by the Kuki Inpi, Churachandpur, NIPCO, Kuki Chiefs Association, Churachandpur and Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association today.

Expressing its grief over the unfortunate incident at Moreh, the four bodies said that it was very unfortunate that such incidents should flare up between communities which have been living together in peaceful co-existence since time immemorial.

The joint statement also urged both parties to relax their stand inview of the historical tradition of peaceful co-existence.

Family members of the victims on either side have also been urged to forgive and forget.

The people and all organisations have also been urged not to fuel the tense atmosphere and instead to help restore normalcy at the border town.

A large number of other civil society organisations have also appealed for peace while condoling the bereaved family members as well as condemning the mindless acts of violence.

The organisations which have spoken out on the issue include, the All Colleges Tribal Students' Organisation, All Manipur Tribal Women Union, Universal Mothers' Organisation, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur, Cultural Research Academy, Moreh, MSF, Eastern Radian Organisation, Thangmeiband Youth Club, Women Action for Development, Senior Citizens for Society, Manipur Peace Committee, AMYPCO, Democratic Youth Federation of India, United NGOs Mission, Manipur, BSP, Samata Party, BJP, CPI (M), The Manipur State Pensioners' Union, All Manipur Muslims Welfare Association, AMMOCOC, Universal Progressive Club, Chingtam United Women's Association, WACAK, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Meira Paibi Development Organisation, Nongchup Imphal Loumi Sinmi Chaokhat Thourang Lup, Kangleipak Students' Association, KANGLEICHALL, MEEKHOL, HERICOUN, MEELAL, AKSIL, United Ching Tam Clubs Association, Manipurgi Ngamkhei Kanba Lup, SFI, Maring Cultural Association, AMMSO and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee.
