An ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh from the Journalist Welfare Fund was handed over to Kongbrailatpam Ongbi Apanbi Devi, wife of deceased journalist Kongbrailatpam Brajamohan Dev Sharma, who was the editor of Nagarika Pantha daily newspaper (Hindi/Manipur) during a function held at Press Information Bureau (PIB) Imphal Office today.
The amount was handed over by Media and Communication Officer of PIB Imphal L Premlata Devi to the wife of the deceased journalist.
Speaking at the occasion, she highlighted on the services and facilities being extended to the mediapersons by the Government of India.
Commissioner of Information and Public Relation Dev Sekhar Sharma graced the functional as chairman.
ASD AIR Imphal M Kanankumar; president of Editor Forum, Manipur Shyamkishore Keisham and vice president of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) Hemanta Singh were among those who were also present and spoke at the occasion.
It may be noted here that the Journalist Welfare Fund which came into forced with effect from the financial year 2001-02 was constituted with the purpose of providing one time ex-gratia relief on urgent basis to the family of the journalist who suffer loss of life or who suffer permanent disability.
Cases of extreme hardship on account of untimely death of the sole bread earner who is a journalist may also be considered for assistance from the Fund.
Journalists properly accredited to PIB, Headquarters of the Central or the State Government, who are citizen of India are eligible to receive the fund, However, the decision for g rant would be extended depending on the Committee's satisfaction regarding eligibility of the cases as well as financial resources available.
