The launching of 'first rate' mobile phone service by a private firm and with many others poised to enter the mobile telephony market, people specially the youngsters are caught in a web of 'mobile mania.' The frantic rush for cell phones has brought to fore the stark contrast prevailing in the State between the haves and have nots.
With cell phones elevated to the status of a basic necessity, poor families are really hard pressed by the incessant demands of their wards for cell phones.
"I cannot bear my son's pressure and hence I straight away gave Rs 3500 to him only buy to a cell phone," said a helpless father at Imphal.
"My family would be debt ridden if I keep on giving SIM card recharge amount every month,' rued the father.
Indeed, cell phones have become a status symbol.
However, for those who can afford, they are really grateful to this private firm for providing quality service unlike BSNL.
Besides, even manual labourers and masons particularly non-Manipuris have taken to cell phones.
"With the advent of good mobile service I have earned more than before as I can be contacted by the people" said a non Manipuri mason.
"In this violence torn place I can now ascertain the whereabouts of my children through cell phones I bought for them" stated a class I officer.
