Personnel of Narcotics Control Bureau seized 2240 kilograms of ganja from an isolated place near Patlian village in Churachandpur district yesterday.
Acting on a tip off, the NCB team rushed to the spot located about 5 kms west of Churachandpur police station and seized the ganja which is worth about Rs 56 lakhs in the international market, an NCB official told the press.
The ganja might have been abandoned at the spot after the smugglers came to learn about the presence of the NCB personnel in the area, said the official and added that the seized item would be produced before the Court of the NDPS tomorrow.
The ganja may have been cultivated in the deep terrain of Thangjing hills, the official said and added that the regional office of the NCB is ready to dispose off over 4000 kilograms of contraband ganja and a number of psychotropic substances seized earlier from different places.
The items ready for disposal include 4673 kgs of ganja, 14,236 bottles of expectorant (120 ml each), 1,0828,600 Diazepam tablets, 12,587 unused labels of Diazepam tablets etc, said the official.
The seized items would be consigned to the flames at a suitable site at Imphal.
To dispose the seized contraband items, the NCB has already taken permission from the NDPS Court and Manipur Pollution Control Board.
The disposal date would be fixed by a three men committee including the Deputy Director (Administration), NCB head office, New Delhi as Chairman, Regional Director of the Bureau, Deputy Commissioner of Customs and SP of Narcotics and Affairs of Borders as members.
