Imphal, April 17:
Chief Minister O Ibobi who returned to Imphal after a six day visit to New Delhi today said that the two ADGs, Y Joykumar and C Peter were relieved of their duties and kept on compulsory wait for failing to control the law and order situation which enabled MEELAL activists to torch the State Central Library on April 13.Talking to The Sangai Express today, the Chief Minister said that the Chief Secretary had earlier instructed all concerned deploy adequate security force at the State Central Library.
This instruction was given during a meeting convened by the Chief Secretary, he added.
There were intelligence reports that MEELAL activists could target the library, said the Chief Minister and added that despite the standing instructions, C Peter who was in charge as DGP and Addl DG Y Joykumar, in charge of law and order, failed to provide the needed security cover.
The Government has taken serious note of the matter as the library is situated just behind Raj Bhawan with just a wall dividing the two, said the Chief Minister.
Ibobi added that the act of burning down the Central Library should not be condoned at any cost and added that all right thinking persons should condemn the act.
For the umpteen time, the Chief Minister said that his Government is not against the development of Meetei Mayek.
As Manipur is home to a number of communities, discussing the matter with all sections of society is needed before any decision is taken, said the CM adding that the same has also been conveyed to MEELAL.
The Chief Minister said that to develop Meetei Mayek and implement it, the Government is in touch with representatives of all section of society to work out a formula which can be acceptable to all.
Coming down heavily on the burning of the Central Library, the Chief Minister said that even at times of war, places like National libraries, museums, hospitals and educational institutions are not targeted.
There is nothing more tragic than burning the Central library which housed a good number of priceless books and records which can never be replaced, said the Chief Minister.
A new building may be constructed to replace the burnt down library, but the historical books and records which went up in flames can never be replaced, he observed.
The world should take note of such an act and condemn it as one, added Ibobi.
