Imphal, September 25: Even as mass sit-in-protest demonstrations against the alleged rape and murder of Salam Punam have been launched since yesterday at different parts of Nongmaikhong, Khordak and Arong area, the JAC formed in connection with the case has been expanded to help it find out the truth of the matter and bring the case to its logical conclusion. A large number of people responded to the call of the JAC and took part in the protest demonstrations held at Nongmaikhong, Khordak and Arong area from 10 am to 4 pm yesterday, the JAC president informed.

He said that the protest demonstration would continue every day from 10 am till 4 pm till the killer/s of Punam is/are produced and handed over to the people for giving fitting and exemplary punishment.

On the other hand, the JAC formed in connection with the death of the girl has been upgraded to a State level body to give it more power to find out the truth of the matter during a joint meeting of the various Meira Paibis lups and representatives of the JAC at the office of Women's Association for Civic Action, Kangleipak (WACAK) this afternoon.

Accordingly, secretary general of All Manipur Women Social Reformation and Development Samaj Th Ramani has been elected as chairman, president of WACAK M Ibetombi as vice-chairman and S Priyokumar as the convenor of the expanded JAC, said a statement issued by the convenor late in the evening.

Meanwhile, All Kakching Khunou Meira Paibi Welfare Association has come out strongly against the alleged attempt to shield the killers and categorically stated that there is no reason why the perpetrators of the crime should be condoned.

While encouraging the JAC to carry on the fight without any fear, the women's body announced it would always support the cause of the JAC.
