At least two passengers were killed while more than 40 others sustained injuries when a bus plying between Ukhrul and Imphal met with an accident along Nungshangkhong road near Patkai Christian Academy, 13 kms from Sangshak police station at around 1.45 pm today.
According to police report, the accident took place as the passenger bus (Blue Dart Express) bearing registration No.MN-05E/0032 suffered technical a snag and the driver lost control while taking a sharp turning.
The bus fell into a gorge 50 metres deep.
Personnel from 23 Assam Rifles located at Sangshak joined hands with the villagers in rescuing the trapped passengers.
They also tried to save the two seriously injured passengers who later succumbed at the spot.
One of the deceased passenger is said to be a Nepali man while the other is a man from Kachai.
Among the injured, 13 of have been brought to RIMS Hospital as their conditions were critical, for treatment late evening.
Of the 13, five of them are women.
32 other injured passengers have also been reportedly admitted to the unit hospital of 23 Assam Rifles at Sangshak and Ukhrul district hospital.
