THOUGH ASSAM , known for its rich tradition of culture and with the beautiful tourists' spots like the famous Kaziranga Park , Majuli Island , has the great tourism potentiality, dequate development and publicity with a good infrastructure to attract the domestic as well as the foreign tourists is therefore required for boosting the economy through tourism.
With beautiful locales and tourist spots blessed by nature in the state of Assam amidst the insurgency problems, killings and bombardments, the state has an immense scope to earn huge amount of revenue from tourism and also the image of Assam as a land of guns and violence can be wiped out to some extent.
Mention may be made that a team of five member German Karma Riders of the Child Aid Network, Germany , N Petersen had started a cycling expedition from Guwahati on October 11 which is still underway, its spokesperson informed that Assam is safe for tourists and incidents of terrorist activities like bomb blasts cannot deter tourists from visiting the state.
With Raas festivals being celebrated in the state, Majuli Island, the world biggest riverine island is celebrating its 169th Raas festival.
Reports reveal that Basudev Goswami, the 10th Sartadhikar of Dakhinpat Satra had introduced the oldest Raas festival in Majuli in the year 1840.The Raas festival is being celebrated in different parts of the state and the chief minister of the state declared on November 13 the North East's famous Nalbari Raas Mahotsav as tourism festival to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
He further announced that the Sri Harmindir be developed as the tourist spot including the satras and devalayas that are spread over the districts.
Apart from the celebration of Raas festival, Majuli Island which is the largest riverine island in the world is endowed with rich spiritual and cultural heritage, peculiar flora and fauna ,rich and fertile soil ,peaceful atmosphere and pollution free environment ,harmonious ethnic life making the Island a unique one which is incomparable to any places of the world.
Sources revealed that the cradle of Assamese culture, Majuli Island is under threat due to the continuous erosion by banks of river Brahmaputra , wiping out scores of villages and displacing thousands of people.
Therefore, a global approach to this problem of erosion has become inevitable to save this largest r iver i sland of the world as well as its glowing cultural heritage.
