'Child trafficking reduces but women trafficking on raise'

Child trafficking in the state has reduced to somewhat extend but number of women trafficking is on the raise, said Women Development Officer of Social Welfare Department, Surinder A Sishak yesterday.
The officer said this while expressing concerned on the increasing human trafficking in the state speaking at the One-Day Consultation on Child Trafficking in Manipur, organized by the Coalition on Children Rights to Protection (CCRP), Manipur in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department at conference hall of the department.
She said that since the enactment of the Juvenile Justice Act, Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards were set up across the nine districts of the state.
These committees and boards are effectively dealing with the rehabilitation of children who are victims of trafficking.
A total of 52 children from Tamenglong rescued from children homes in Tamil Nadu were handed over to the Tamenglong Child Welfare Committee to rehabilitate them, she said.
In most of the cases of child trafficking, parents and guardians of the children were found luring by the traffickers with false promises of imparting good education.
Traffickers thus obtained prior permission from the children's parents and guardians.
Today's consultation meeting was presided by M Purnimashi, chairman of Mahila Kalyan Samiti.
In the technical session was moderated by K Geetchandra and secretary N Philips of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union and advocate Khaidem Mani talked on different topics related with child trafficking in the state.
