Imphal, March 09, 2010:
A protest rally against the construction of Tipaimukh Multipurpose Project was marched on the street at Noney in Tamenglong district after a public meeting.
A memorandum was also submitted to the state Chief Minister through the Nungba Sub-divisional officer.
The rally was carried out to register objection against the Manipur government planned to sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of project with National Hydro-electricity Power Corporation, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited as joint venture project.
The rally was organised jointly by the Tipaimukh Dam Affected Villages Committee, Nungba area, Committee on Land and Natural Resources, Citizens Concerns for Dam and Development and Action Committee against Tipaimukh Dam and participated by large number of villagers of Nungba area and representatives of the various civil societies that were against the construction of dam.
Placards with slogans like "Our future development and our land, respect our sentiments, go back NHPC, no dam without people concept, we will decide our future and land use our livelihood" etc.
were carried by the rallyists.
The rally marched towards the SDO, Nungba office where the memorandum was handed over for onward submission to the Chief Minister.
The memorandum urged the chief minister to halt back to all efforts for inking the MoU between NHEPC, SJVNL and the state government for the construction of Tipaimukh dam stating that it is against the will and aspiration of the people to be affected by the project.
Before the rally kicked off a public meeting was held in which a decision was taken unanimously resolved to oppose the construction of the dam.
