The ever increasing solid waste materials and the swelling up of dusts with the onset of winter in Imphal area have caused panic to many that the menaces may cause health hazard to the residents of Imphal.
The accumulation of waste materials in Imphal area has been increasing since few years back, according to an official from the Manipur Pollution Control Board.
The failure on the part of the authority concerned in disposing the waste materials has caused inconvenience to the residents of the area.
In ward No 26 of Imphal Municipal Council, around 100 TPD of waste materials have been generated daily.
This data shows that around 0.15 kg to 0.35 kg of waste materials has been generated by per individual of the area.
The official said, from the ward in question, 60% of the waste materials accounted for domestic wastes.
According to the data, 10% of the wastes are from institutions, 15% from commercials, 5% are industrial wastes, 5% agriculture wastes, and 5% from natural wastes.
The wastes produced by hotels, restaurants, and trade centres in Imphal city are organic wastes which can be recycled.
The health institutions like clinics, hospitals, dispensaries, etc have generated huge medical wastes.
Significantly, the absence of proper mechanism to dispose the waste materials is causing nuisance to the dwellers of Imphal city.
With the waste materials remaining unattended coupled with the increase in dust particles with the onset of winter, many of the residents feared that these could be a health hazard to the residents of Imphal city.
