Students in private schools top enrollment

Imphal, April 28 2012: According to a recent report, Manipur tops other states of India in enrollment of students between age groups of 6 to 14 in private schools.

While the whole India recorded a percentage of 25.6 percent, Manipur alone have 71.6 percent as per the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2011 North East which was released today by MLA Dr I Ibohalbi at the conference hall of Institute of Cooperative Management (ICM), Lamphelpat.

Speaking at the occasion, MLA Dr Ibohalbi said that the present unrest situation in the society is because of lack of proper education.

Even when other countries have taken up different steps in developing education system, Manipur is still lagging behind without much sign of improvement which is an unfortunate matter.

Taking serious notes on the present scenario of education in the state, he further added that people in the state are running after intellectual education only while leaving behind moral and ethical education which is the main principle of education thereby raising the need for a reform in the educational system.

According to the report, schools in rural area of the state lacks proper drinking water facility and seperate toilet facilities for boys and girls in co-educational schools.

On the other hand, the report shows increasing percentage of school going children in the recent years.

Numbers of children from 6 to 14 years who do not attend school was recorded a 1.8 percent in 2010 and the percentage was decreased to 1.1 in 2011.While the percentage of children from 15 to 16 years who do not go to school was recorded at 13 percent in 2010 and the figure came down to 8.7 in 2011 which indicates the increase in enrollment in school.

Moreover, Manipur also surpassed other states in literacy rate.

According to the report, the percentage of students in 5th standard who can read text books of 2nd standard is 48.2 percent for the whole India.

Exceeding the figure, Manipur recorded a percentage of 71.3 percent.

On the other hand, 27 percent of 5th standard students in government school can calculate division while private school recorded 57 percent.

20 percent students from 5 to 8 standard in government schools went to private tuition while 50 percent of private school students went to tuition.

Attendance of teachers in the schools in Manipur was recorded from 75 to 78 percent while students' attendance was recorded from 52 to 56 percent.

Even when, Manipur exceeds other states in different aspects of education, it still lacks facilities of safe drinking water in the schools.

While India recorded 73.5 percent in safe drinking water facilities available in schools, Manipur recorded only 6.4 percent.

Seperate toilets for girls are also low with a percentage of 15.3 percent and mid day meal facility get by the schools is also recorded at 30 percent in the report.
