Imphal, June 26 2019: Democratic Students' Alliance Manipur (DESAM) observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the theme "Illicit Drug: The Dark Future of Youth" Wednesday at Imphal College.

Head of Department of Psychiatry RIMS Dr RK Lenin, president DESAM Salam Aakash, Principal Imphal College Moirangthem Priyobrata and former secretary AMADA Ningthoukhongjam Bobo attended the event as presidium members.

Speaking at the event, Dr RK Lenin informed that according to a survey-"Magnitude of substance use in Indian 2019" conducted by Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in co-ordination with All India Institute of medical Sciences (AIMS), 23 out of 100 in Manipur were found consuming alcohol.

The figures for use of No 4, WY tablets, dendrite and other substance abuses in Manipur are also relatively higher than the figures at National level, he said.

The trend is also increasing in other States including Punjab, he added.

About 23 percent of the population in India are adolescent and 30 percent are youth, he said emphasising the need to educate the younger generation on the harmful effects of drug abuse.

Healthy youth is way forward to development and growth, he said advising students and youth to distance themselves from illegal drugs.

Giving keynote address, Shamurailatpam Rishikumar stressed on the need of a strong law against drug abuse and illicit trafficking to curb drug abuse menace.

He also highlighted the January 11, 2013 incident in which huge quantity of drugs were seized from Imphal airport and the 2018 case in which drugs worth over Rs 20 crore were seized allegedly from the possession of an ADC member.

Recalling various other seizure of drugs in the State, he stressed that there should be stringent laws to punish the culprits involved irrespective of their posts and positions to save the State's future.

Proper education and academic awareness programmes are keys to preventing drug abuse, he said and urged all to guide their wards in the right direction for a drug free State.

Community Medicine Department, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) also organised an interaction programme on drug abuse at Savio English Higher Secondary School.

The programme conducted under the health outreach programme of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was led by Professor Brogen Singh Akoijam, said a statement of Community Medicine Department, RIMS.

143 BN CRPF also observed the day at its HQ today under the supervision of Commandant Lal Chand Yadav in presence of DR GK Kabui, Chief Medical Officer (SG), M Santosh Singh, Dy Comdt, Geetchandra Mangang, sec gen CADA and women leader Th Sanahanbi Devi, said CRPF.

Border Security Force, Sector (Counter Insurgency Operation) Manipur in collaboration with Narcotics Control Bureau, Sub Zone Imphal observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a cycle rally.

The cycle awareness rally was flagged off from Sector HQs Koirengei to Leikinthabi Shantipur (Sekmai River bridge) Imphal, said BSF today.

Sh Anand Singh, DIG Sector HQs and officiating Commandant Sh Nitin Gupta of 182 Bn BSF raised slogan - Say No to Drugs, said BSF.

Awareness programme was also organised at Leikinthabi Shantipur village with senior citizen Hijam Mani Sai and Loitongbam Indu Devi, ward member as presidium members.

About 80 people attended the event.

A seminar on drug abuse was also organised at Drill Shed of Koirengei by Dr JC Anal, CMO (SG) of 182 Bn BSF, said a statement of the security force.
