Police CI ops will extend to Barak and Thoubal: DGP

Imphal, March 30 2011: After the induction of hovercrafts, the police department is considering induction of indigenous mechanized boats, said DGP Y Joykumar today, asserting that there were plans for expansion of counter insurgency operations in other water bodies other than the Loktak lake.

There was a consideration for deployment of police personnel with at least three mechanized boats in the Barak river at Jiribam bordering with Assam and at the downstream of the Thoubal Dam apart from adding a mechanized boat to the Loktak Protection Force which had recently been handed over three hovercrafts, the DGP said speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the newly constructed building of the Imphal East district police at its HQs at Porompat.

Y Joykumar further stated that there was a marked change in the Imphal east district police in the last four years in terms of manpower and infrastructures since he assumed power as DGP in 2007.The district police will have no more shortage of manpower in Imphal east.

The difficulties faced by the district police from an operational point of view had been eased.

For such a marked change, the present Chief Minister should be thanked as he took the major initiative to uplift the district police to this present stage, the DGP asserted.

The Police Department is witnessing major changes in all fields.

New police stations have been established in places across the state wherever they were needed.

Many outposts have also been opened, he said.

The importance of a reserve police segment in a police organisation was not fully appreciated in the past.

But today, with the knowledge of its importance the state police department has enough personnel in the reserve line.

Except for family accommodation facilities, there is no other shortage in the police department the DGP said adding that to provide family accommodation facilities, the government has sought a special financial package from the 14th Finance Commission.

Imphal East SP, Th Radheshyam, speaking on the occasion, recalled the creation of the Imphal east district police after the creation of Imphal east as a full-fledged revenue district of the state on June 18, 1997.At that time, the strength of the district police was only 151 meant to man five PSs and three outposts.

Today, the district police has a strength of 1544 personnel.

A total of 296 home guard personnel and 2050 VDFs in 10 posts are assisting the district police in maintaining law and order.

206 police commandos with an additional 132 IRB and MR personnel, attached with the police, are also being utilized in counter insurgency operations in this district, the SP added.

Imphal West Senior SP, L Kailun and top ranked police officers of the district also took part in the inauguration function.
