World Ozone Day 2025 observed at Chandel

Chandel, September 16 2025:
Joining the global observance, World Ozone Day 2025 was observed today at the Secretariat Community Hall, Chandel, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting the ozone layer.
The event was attended by Deputy Commissioner Chandel, L Nandakumar Singh; DFO Chandel, Dr N Munal Meitei; ADC Chandel.
Md Firoj Khan; CNPO president Francis Thamdok; and vice-president of Naga Hoho, David Boyes as presidium members.
Held under the theme "From Science to Global Action", the event witnessed the participation of over 120 individuals, including DLOs, village chiefs, and members of self-help groups.
Addressing the gathering.
Dr N Munal Meitei, DFO/Chandel highlighted that World Ozone Day commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, which regulates the production, consumption, and emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) .
He further explained that more than 60% of the earth's oxygen originates from Phytoplankton and Coral reefs, which are now severely threatened by ultraviolet radiation.
He continued that if efforts are made to protect the ozone layer, the global warming of the earth could be controlled by 0.5 degree Celsius.
In his address as chief guest, Deputy Commissioner L Nandakumar urged the community to prioritize tree plantation and sustainable practices to safeguard both the ozone layer and the environment.
