Imphal, June 16 2009: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has urged Chief Minister O Ibobi to revoke the orders in pursuance of the Cabinet decision of June 1 which decided to pull up all unauthorised students' union offices in government premises.

In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Irengbam Jamesbond Mangang argued that AMSU has been instrumental in spearheading several crucial students' and social movements in the state since its inception towards development of the state and welfare of the students' community.

Highlighting the contributions of AMSU for the development of the state, the memorandum pointed out that the students' body was born during the tumultuous period of artificial famine of 1965.It also stated that the office of the students' union has been located in the DM College of Science campus with customary humanitarian understanding of the authorities and the public for forty four years.

The AMSU representation mentioned its contributions for the cause of grant of statehood, agitation for the inclusion of 'Meiteilon' in the 8th schedule, establishment of Manipur University and Regional Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), agitation against the influx of foreigners in 1980, and its role for the removal of 'evils' in education system.

Jamesbond Mangang also stated that AMSU has used DMC Science compound for the services to the state since 1998, adding that the construction of the building has helped temporary residence facilities to students of rural areas.

Asserting that the building and the office had neither occupied any ground, building or classroom of the government nor disturbed normal classes and activities of the college, the memo contended that the office is like the sacred deity 'Khunthokhanbi'.

The representation of AMSU further pointed out that buildings like Adimjati SC/ST hostel, Manipur Baptist Church, and other grounds of Thangmeiband Athletic Union, etc have been established in government premises.

Urging the Chief Minister to cancel the government order resulting from the cabinet meeting of June 1, the memorandum also asserted that AMSU has always cooperated with the government in matters of importance to the state.
