Five UG cadres surrender before DG, IGAR (S)

Imphal, June 15 2010: Five cadres of different armed groups laid down their arms before the DGP Y Joykumar and IGAR (S) Maj Gen CA Krishnan at Mantripukhri on June 14, said a PRO IGAR (S) release.

The surrenderees include three KCP (MC) cadres namely SS Lt Kiran, SS Sgt Angom Ibochauba and SS Cpl Thomba, and two PULF (Umar Farooq) cadres identified as Md Samir alias Inao and Md allaudin alias Romeo.

Conveying that the peaceful surrender of the five persons is the eventual outcome of long and sustained efforts by 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (S), the PRO release listed one AK 47 rifle and four 9 mm pistols as weapons surrendered by them.

Addressing the gathering, DGP Joykumar welcomed the five youths to the mainstream of civil society.

"The peaceful surrender of these cadres with arms would definitely be a guiding beacon for militants not in the SoO with the Government, to follow and pave the way for peace and harmony in Manipur," Maj Gen Krishnan said.

AR assures rehabilitation : The 27 Sector Assam Rifles here have assured that they are ready to rehabilitate any one who gives up arms and give their best efforts in helping them to join a permanent organization where in they could lead a normal and secured life.

According to a sector official, some surrenderees have disclosed that many of their compatriots were also willing to follow them.

But have reservations and were terrified that the security forces would exploit them after their surrender.

The Assam Rifles are ready is receive them with open arms, 'we will look after them, let them come forward, we will rehabilitate them,', the officer assured in an apparent attempt to write off the misperception that any armed cadres may have before surrendering.

An elderly man, whom the AR official said had not seen his only son ever since he joined a militant group, was produce before the media to relate his joy in witnessing the force rehabilitating his son after giving up arms.

Among others, we are now trying to enrol him (the surrender cadre) in some organization; otherwise we are not rehabilitating him, the officer added.
