MU team to inspect proposed dental college at RIMS on Aug 29

Imphal, August 27, 2012: RIMS Dental College which would have an initial intake capacity of 50 students would begin its maiden academic session from 2012-13. Talking to TSE, RIMS Director Dr S Sekharjit said that facilities being provided by RIMS dental department would be enhanced considerably once the dental college come into being.

Interestingly, it was former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda who sanctioned establishment of a dental college in RIMS in the form of an economic package.

However, the sanctioned dental college remained a mirage all these years as the authorities concerned could not execute the same.

Dr Sekharjit claimed that RIMS Dental College has all the basic requirements prescribed by the Dental Council of India.

In accordance with the recommendations of the latest inspection team of the Dental Council of India, requisite teachers have been appointed together with recruitment of a qualified candidate based outside the State who has experience in Prosthodontics as Principal-in- charge of the dental college.

After due approval by the Dental Council of India, Manipur University has also given its consent for affiliation.

A team of Manipur University would inspect the dental college on August 29. Earlier, when the MU team inspected the college there were some shortfalls in the college.

The MU team would be inspecting again to see if the shortfalls have been made up, said Dr Sekharjit.

Though class rooms have been arranged, negotiations are being conducted to hire some houses on rent as the existing hostel would not be enough to accommodate all the students.

Nevertheless, necessary steps have been initiated to construct a spacious hostel for the dental college.

Already the Hospital System Consultancy Corporation which is functioning under the Union Health Ministry has been entrusted the task of constructing the hostel and construction work would begin from next year.

The college may encounter some shortfalls or deficiencies in its first academic session.

Yet, as the minimum requirements have been put into place, all the North Eastern States barring Assam have been informed to send their interested dental students to the new college.

The college would have nine clinical specialities and the existing dentistry department of RIMS would be merged into the college with the passage of time.

By that time, patients can enjoy far better facilities than those facilities being provided by RIMS dental department, Dr Sekharjit asserted.
