NH-2 closed briefly at Senapati Bazaar

Imphal, August 10, 2012: Several passenger buses and goods-laden trucks were stranded near Senapati bazaar along National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur road) on Friday following volunteers of Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) imposing a shut down on the market protesting against the reported incident of threatening by armed cadres of Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA).

According to police report, the incident occurred after a minor skirmish between some members of SDSA who were returning from Imphal and a group of staff of Henbung Check Post at around 5:30 pm yesterday on their way to the security check post.

Armed cadres of KRA intervened and reportedly threatened the SDSA members.

Another source said SDSA leaders, who were returning to Senapati district headquarters from Imphal last evening got infuriated to find the check post at Henbung closed.

The SDSA members argued with the taxation officials for closing the check post and a minor scuffle occurred.

At that moment, some KRA cadres joined the scuffle in favour of the taxation officials of the check post.

The KRA cadres threatened the SDSA members.

Enraged over the conduct of KRA cadres, the SDSA volunteers enforced a shutdown of all the shops at Senapati bazaar from 11:30 am and blocked the National Highway-2. However, the agitation ended after SDSA filed an FIR against the taxation officials of Henbung Check Post.

The market resumed its normal activities from 2 p.m.onwards and free movement of all the stranded vehicles was allowed.

ON the other hand, a large number of vehicles, mostly passenger buses and loaded trucks have been reportedly stranded near Makru Bridge along Imphal-Jiribam Highway following sudden collaspe of the bridge, thus preventing normal vehicular movement.

Reports said repairing work on the bridge is now being taking up in full swing to ensure free passage of vehicles along the National Highway 37.
