Imphal, December 08 2010:
The 24-hour bandh called by a group of KCP against Government of India (GoI)'s propaganda of 'arresting' UNLF chairman from Motihari in Bihar commenced from 5 pm
yesterday.
It concluded peacefully today.
While life in rural and hill areas remained normal, it came to a standstill in Imphal and its outlying areas as long-distance and inter-district buses remained off the roads fearing attacks by bandh supporters.
Though private vehicles, particularly light four-wheelers and two-wheelers were seen on the roads, no transport and commercial vehicles plyed on the roads in Imphal city.
All business establishments, shops and market places remained closed for the day owing to the bandh.
Office attendance in most of the offices in Imphal were low and schools remained closed for the day.
However, reports received from other districts of the state and rural areas said that except for the non-operation of inter-district and long distance buses and transport vehicles, life was normal.
No untoward incidents were reported during the bandh which concluded at 5 pm today.
The KCP (Malemnganba) group imposed the 24-hour bandh protesting against the allegation made by the GoI that UNLF chairman Meghen alias Sanayaima was arrested in Bihar while he was actually arrested in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The bandh did not get support from the UNLF itself who made its stand known to the public through the local media by an e-mail statement.
The statement observed that the bandh would contribute nothing to the ongoing liberation movement for the people of Manipur.
