UCM: Beware of the trap to which 'IM' has fallen

Imphal, July 03 2014: United Committee, Manipur (UCM) has cautioned all communities in Manipur against the alleged trap of Government of India to which NSCN-IM has already fallen.

Addressing the people on the occasion of 14th Foundation Day of UCM here today, its president Y Nabachandra asserted that the Government of India is all out to disintegrate Manipur into pieces.

"Such policy of the Government of India should be aware of by all communities in Manipur," Nabachandra said, adding that the short-sighted and myopic policy of NSCN-IM, which is being used by the Government of India, should also be aware of by all.

Harping on the line of peaceful co-existence, Nabachandra said that one community should forgive another community's fault if committed any in the past and learn to live together.

The UCM president further advocated that instead of confronting each other, every community should engage in creating a situation to allow understanding the common problems together since such confrontationist approach will be suicidal for every community.

He then said UCM has been working right from the beginning to have cordial relationship among various communities and for the peaceful co-existence.

Nabachandra also said UCM is sternly against bigger groups trying to dominate smaller groups.

"Big or small, all communities in Manipur should share the burden together and enjoy the good time together," he added.

Furthermore, UCM president pointed out that Manipur is reeling under a plethora of issues today, including unchecked influx of outsiders, which affect peace in the society.

This rampant influx of outsiders, however, could be solved by the State administration if it has the political will power to implement Inner Line Permit system, he said.

Speaking as the chief guest of the Foundation Day function, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof H Nandakumar Sarma said though the Manipur territorial integrity could have been protected, the danger still looms large in Manipur as the population of Manipur is fast ballooning with 128 persons residing in every square km.

He said the civil society organisations cutting across community lines should engage in the matter with urgency.

UCM's Consultative Committee member R.K.Ranendrajit said that UCM has been formed not so easily and recalled how and why UCM came into existence in the year 2001 .

Various public leaders including AMKIL president Ph Sakhi, NIPCO president Sunil Karam, IPSA president E Johnson, PANDM president and former UCM chief Yumnamcha Dilipkumar, UPF president BM Yaima Shah, UCM consultative committee member H Ibotombi, ACOAM Lup president Ksh Somorendro, Kanglamei president Y Lairik Leima and AMUCO president Dr Y Mani Khuman also participated in the function, which started with lighting of lamps by the dignitaries and observing of two minutes silence as mark of respect to those who laid down their lives for the cause of protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur during the June 18 incident of 2001 .

Earlier, delivering the key note address, Joy Konthoujam, general secretary of UCM, stated that the territorial integrity of the State has been facing certain palpable threats from external forces which the people from all communities need to confront together and pointed out that unity of the people was witnessed in June 18 incident.

He also alerted the people not to fall prey to tactics of communal riot orchestrated by some vested groups whose intention is to destabilize peaceful co-existence amongst the people of all communities.
