Person dies in AR custody

Imphal, November 26 2011: A person who was aprehended by AR personnel while he was attending a public meeting at Khurkhul Makha Leikai, under Sekmai police station, died in their custody.

Top AR officers have approached family members to pay compensation for the death and are also consoling them to subside the issue.

The deceased person has been identified as one Heikham Nando (35), s/o H Manglemjao of Khurkhul Makha Leikai.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Pjuritsabam Tombi, member of Khurkhul Gram Panchayat, ward number II, told Hueiyen Lanpao that H Nando was arrested yesterday at around 2 pm from Khurkhul Makha leikai by personnel of 30 AR led by a major, stationed at Loitang Khunnou Spining Mill, while he was attending a public meeting.

He further went on to say that a public meeting was convened on the November 24 at the community hall in Khurkhul Makha Leikai, on the issue of a certain amount of money taken as loan by the wife of Nando, which could not be recovered by the concern private banks.The meeting unanimously resolved to bring out Nando and his wife who were in hiding because of the incident.

On November 25 another meeting was held at the same venue where Nando himself was also present.

The AR personnel also came to the spot and asked the women who were in the meeting whether they also could attend the meeting to which the women complied.

Soon after the meeting Nando was arrested by the AR personnel and took him to their post inspite of stiff agitation from the local women.

Since Nando was not released till late in the evening that day, local meira paibis went to the post and demanded his release.

The AR officials said that he would be released next morning at 1 am.

He was never released though.

He further said that, later next morning that is today, the AR personnel informed the meira paibis who went to the post that Nando has been taken to the PHC at Sekmai for medical check up.

While the women folks were waiting for Nando, they were told that the Major had informed the local MLA Borajao that Nando was dead.

The AR also admitted their fault to the local MLA.

A public meeting was held today at Khurkhul Makha Leikai where MLA, Borajao and ex-Minister N Biren were also present.

Brigadier Nabinipkumar, 9 Sector was also present at the meeting where he said that the AR felt sorry for the unwanted incident that took place and asked the locals for their forgiveness.

It is also brought to light that the AR have approached family members to pay compensation for the death and are also consoling them to subside the issue.

Meanwhile ,the meeting has unanimously resoleved to form a JAC against the killing of Nando, demand a judicial enquiry, deamnd shifting of AR post from Loitang Khunnou, as also compensation and a suitable government job to his wife and not to take the body of the deceased until and unless the demands are made.
