Garbage piles up in Imphal city

Imphal, June 19 2015 :
Imphal city area is now strewn with garbage as the indefinite cease work strike by employees of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) entered the 10th day on Friday.
The striking IMC employees are demanding the 6th Pay.
They accused the State Government of remaining tight-lipped on their demand.
They staged protest at the entrance of the IMC chairperson.
The staff members claimed that IMC can also fulfill the more than 2 years old demand.
However, some muster roll workers of the council are continuing cleaning works, but in the past few days, garbage piled up on many corners of the city as the collection of waste has been reduced due to the strike.

Imphal Municipal Employees' Union general secretary Thoudam Sobita told reporters IMC has not yet cleared 16 months' due salaries of the employees, apart from ignoring the demand for 6th Pay implementation.
She said the Government provides Rs 35 lakh as grant-in-aid to the council every month and that this amount has already been handed to the council by the State Government.
IMC also gets revenue amounting to Rs 20 lakh per month, she added.
The council can easily implement 6th Pay by spending this regular huge amount of revenue, Sobita said.
The union leader alleged that the IMC chairperson has failed to take up welfare policy for the employees and instead he has been indulging in wrongdoings in cahoots with the councillors.
She said all muster roll workers who are cleaning the streets will be stopped from continuing it from tomorrow.
