Airport Drug Scandal : PIL to be filed for revealing 'drug owner'

Imphal, February 11 2013: IN order to know the real identity of the 'drug owner', a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is all set to be filed in the Court in connection with seizure of drug consignment worth Rs 1.4 crores from the Tulihal Airport by a team of Imphal West Narcotic Cell led by its OC, K Ranjit.

A decision to the effect was taken during a discussion session on "Scandal over seizure of drug consignment from Tulihal Airport" which was jointly organized by AMADA and CADA at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound here today.

A number of other resolutions were also taken during the discussion session.

Some of the important ones are to press the State Government to hand over the issue of the drug seizure case to an independent investigating agency like CBI and NIA, re-institution of the abolished SIU and to take up various forms of intense agitation jointly by AMADA and CADA until these demands are fulfilled.

Advocate Khaidem Mani, who moderated the discussion session, observed that it is very unfortunate that in spite of the presence of powerful investigating agencies like CBI and NIA, no culprit have been punished in Manipur so far, although a number of powerful Chief Ministers, Ministers and MLAs of the country have brought to justice.

"If we are to do away with the menace of drug smuggling and corruption from the State, we should bring up good and elect sincere representatives.

The Civil Society Organisations of the State should come together and help in trying to elect the right representatives of the people.

Only then all those Thikadars acting as social workers will not be able to come up", Khaidem Mani observed.

He further informed that the FIR lodged against the 'owner' of the drugs seized from Imphal Airport, as claimed by the State Government, can get bail anytime since Section 21 of NDPS Act has not been leveled against the 'owner'.

If Section 21 of the Act is leveled against him, he should be imprisoned for at least 10 years in addition to imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

Presided over by Ningthoujam Binoy, President, Senior Citizen, Manipur, discussion session was also attended by Shivdutta Luwang, Editor of Hueiyen Lanpao (Meetei Mayek); Khoirom Loyalakpa, Editor of Naharolgi Thoudang; Associate Prof Chinglen Maisnam of Manipur University, Social Activists Dhanabir Laishram, Ningthoujam Lancha and former President of Manipur Chemist and Druggist Association Ch Shyamjai.
